This lesson contains a Roleplay assignment.
"So, welcome to your first Arithmancy class little dudes and dudettes" He says in a lazy voice. "So, like, I hope you all enjoy numbers and stuff associated with them, because that's what this class is all about, man." He notices some students taking out their text books, and he waves his hand. "No books today kiddos. Nah, today we're just going to learn the basics. So, Arithmancy is the study of numbers and how you can use them to predict the future and junk. It works really well with Numerology, they're like-- hand in hand like a happy couple." He sighs and lays back on the grass closing his eyes. "So like, for this class I just want you to count to ten. Go on, count." He listens to the students do their counting, some obviously not very happy with his teaching style. "There yah go." He says when they finish up. "You just did some Arithmancy. For the rest of the class, just sit quietly and meditate."
There were mutters as some of the students thought he was joking, but as his snores drifted toward their ears on the breeze, it became apparent he wasn't. Several students thought about leaving, or complaining to the headmistress, but they knew that if they wanted to get their house points, they were stuck there on the grass for at least an hour.

It's apparent that although Nico loves numbers, his approach to teaching is somewhat lacking. You know that it's only the first class, but you wonder if the next one will be much better. Please roleplay your reaction to his class, as well as whether you're happy he's so relaxed, or annoyed. You may roleplay with your classmates as well.

Camille sat on the soft grass, watching as some people shot dark looks towards Professor Nico. She could tell most of her classmates were displeased at his choice of lesson, but to be honest, she wasn't too bothered about it. She was always terrible at numbers and was relieved they wouldn't be doing anything too complicated for the first class. But then again, it just made her more nervous as to what might be coming the rest of the term; Professor Nico may appear to be a very relaxed professor, but that didn't erase the fact that he taught a notoriously difficult subject.
She tried to control her breathing, in, out, in, out, while the sounds of Professor Nico's snoring and her classmates' quiet conversations washed over her.

Serena glances around at the other students in the class. Seeing that she isn't the only one who is confused, she sighs in relief. Leaning over to the student next to her, she whispers, "Interesting teaching methods, don't you think? I was really nervous about this class because I was never very good at muggle math, but if all of his classes are like this, I should be able to pass!"
Gaia is inside her thoughts as always; calm yourself numbers is your thing! After all you ARE a Ravenclaw... at least it is nic... Count to ten? Turns to and whispers is HE serious? counts and breathes ... did HE just fall asleep?!?! massages the back of her neck might as well just sit and make the most of this.
Silver walks upto the oak, wondering what this lesson will hold, approaching a spot on the grass she looks around watching the group get larger, As the Professor gave out the class assignment, Silver was shocked to see what a sloppy teacher he was, this was baby stuff not a lesson for older students, She was here to learn not sit quietly and meditate, unfortunately She was unsure what to do next, if she left what then, Would she lose points for her fellow Ravenclaw students for being out of class. In the end she sat quietly at her desk hoping the next time he taught it would be an actual lesson and not a snores fest.

Kainra sat down and sighed as soon as he figured out the assignment. "So....1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10...." Kainra said and shook his head. "Is this really the whole lesson? Seriously...?" Kainra took a book out from his bag and sighed, but propped his legs up on his desk and began to read. "Oh well, time to read some more of this great book. Biggest waste of time class ever, but at least I came prepared."

Finding a spot in full shadow, Thana sits herself down and awaits the Professors' teachings. This Professor Nico is a strange looking man. He dresses like those muggles camping in the north fields! she notices, wrinkling her nose, I hope he doesn't smell like them, too.. Realising she has gotten sidetracked, Thana starts to withdraw her textbook, but pauses, hearing the Professor advise against it. Huh? A practical lesson? she muses, wondering what the unusual Professor has in store. He soon answers.
Furrowing her brow, Thana studies the Professor for a moment. She waits for the - surely inevitable - laughter. The Professors' admission of his hilarious little joke. Excluding confused giggles from fellow pupils, no such thing occurs. Is he..serious? Craning to look over her shoulder, Thana scrutinises her classmates, looking for the half-troll or other blatant dimwit who might need such a simple lesson. The clothing of her fellows conveys wealth and status (or lack thereof), their grooming betrays their care for appearance - and some are far more scruffy than others - and a few have already failed to maintain their attention, staring aimlessly into the distance...but honestly, not a single pupil looks that bloody stupid. When he said basics, he really wasn't kidding. Rolling her eyes, Thana lends her voice to the chanting. "..Ten." she finishes, unable to completely remove the sarcasm from her voice.
"What?" Thana exclaims in surprise, "But, what do we - sir?...Sir?" A familiar humming reaches her ears. Thana stares open-mouthed in disbelief at the strange wizard, lying in his muggle clothes, snoring away like a house-elf after too much Butterbeer. Is this a test? A trick? she wonders, narrowing her eyes at the sleeping Professor. He really is sound asleep, though. "Wow. Ok then." she mutters, shaking her head, not knowing whether to feel amused or purely frustrated. Damned if she'll be sitting there for an hour doing absolutely nothing. He never specified that we had to 'sit quietly and meditate' about Arithmancy in particular..
Thana fumbles with her bag, pulling out her fresh new copy of Magical Drafts and Potions. She stifles a yawn; settling into her new term-time home has been exhausting. I could always follow his lead, take a nap... The girl stiffens abruptly, recalling her familys' reaction to catching her 'slacking'. Anyway, I've been dying to read this, she thinks, relaxing as she opens the book and begins to read. Perhaps this way, I might actually learn something from my first Arithmancy lesson.

((WHY do I always write an essay o-o))
Startled by the sound, Camille turned around and saw a Ravenclaw heading towards her. She hastily stood up and brushed herself off.
"I'm okay! It's just - sometimes I get a bit, um, anxious? So doing these deep breaths kind of helps me out with that, but the downside is that I tend to zone out. I'm sorry for scaring you," Camille said sheepishly. "So uh, how are you liking the lesson so far?"
Rylee wandered down to the lake a little before Arithmancy started. She cast her gaze around, looking for any familiar housemates, but found none. Like her, most of the students seemed to be taking their time getting to class.
The first year Hufflepuff settled down in front of the professor and waited for class to begin. Professor Nico was one of the teachers who intrigued her and she was curious to see what his teaching style was like.
"So like, for this class I just want you to count to ten."
Rylee raised her eyebrows at the professor. Was he serious? She looked around to see how her classmates were reacting. Most seemed just as shocked as she was, though a few looked delighted at the chance to get full marks for napping through a class.
Well then, she thought to herself. She took a deep breath and began counting in a low murmur. "One, two, three..." By the time she reached ten, the tightness in her nerves had unraveled a bit. She wondered if that had been the point of the exercise. She waited in silence... and then waited some more. Professor Nico was snoring now. Were they seriously going to do nothing else in this class?
Unsure what to do next, Rylee closed her eyes and began counting forward to one hundred, then backward and forward again...
Destiny sat under a tree and further away from the others as usual. She too thought the professor was joking, but quickly raised an eyebrow when she saw that he was not.
"This is going to be a long year..." She muttered to herself.
As she sat there, she wondered if she should just sneak off. After all, it's not like this guy is going to check to make sure everyone was there when class is officially over. However, she eventually elected to sit against the tree trunk and daydream about soaring over the school grounds on her broom.

Serena sees a student near her pull out a book, "Well that was a good idea..." she mumbles to herself. She moves over next to Kainra, "Hi, I'm Serena. What book are you reading, if you don't mind me asking?"
"It's okay...I get them too! It seems silly but try this.."
Natalie took her right hand and opened it palm side up in front of the Hufflepuff, bending her four fingers into her palm with slight pressure. Taking a step back she began to speak normally.
"When you focus on that one spot, you trick your mind and give yourself time to calm down."
She smiled thinking of how her mother had once taught her the trick. She looked around at her other classmates once more before stating,
"I'm rather disappointed. I know some people are relieved because they hate numbers, but we'll need to know this stuff for our O.W.L.s. If he's this relaxed on lessons, we'll have to cram towards the end. Imagine cramming 8 weeks of lessons into two classes!"
Natalie was shaking her head in disapproval when an idea popped into her head. A study group! I'm rather good at numbers, but I'm ten times better when I have someone working with me. Satisfied with her solution to the Nico problem, Natalie opened her mouth but lightly gasped when she realized she didn't even know the girl's name.
"Oh, how rude of me!"
"I'm Natalie"
Grinning she reached out to shake the girl's hand.
"And you are?"

Ravenna wasn't sure if Professor Nico was joking at first...meditating?! What did that have to do with Arithmancy? Soon the sound of the teacher's snores reached her ears(you've got to be kidding, the students are the ones who are supposed to be falling asleep in class, not the teachers!) 'OK, don't worry about it' she told herself as she sat down, cross-legged. Maybe he'll teach something for real next lesson. Closing her eyes, she counted silently to ten a few times until her mind started to wander...

"I'm reading Warriors: Rising Storm. An interesting fantasy book, written by a group of muggles, about four cat clans in a forest. I won't spoil more for you, however, in case you try to read it. It's a fun book series to read. "Kainra said. "Oh, and I'm Kainra. Nice to meet you, Serena."
"Nice to meet you too. That book sounds interesting! I've always found muggle books fascinating. I grew up with muggles so I didn't really have much choice, I guess."
"Oh! That does help, thank you so much!" Camille enthused, experimentally curling her fingers.
"I'm Camille! And um, I'm actually one of those people that hates numbers and was relieved during this lesson," she said, awkwardly. "I do agree that we'll have to know this stuff, though! I guess I'm just scared that I'll end up failing this subject; I flipped through the texts a bit and I swear I could feel my brain leaking outta my ears."
Serena turns toward , "What do you think of the class?"
"I could help you! We could work together. I've scoped out our book already-- the first five chapters to be exact."
Natalie let out a deep breath and paused her train of thought to glance over at Professor Nico. Oh....I wonder if....hm...Yes.
"Hey Camille, what do you think Professor Nico would do if I woke him up?"

Gaia overhears a muggle book conversation and makes a mental note to ask her mom for new fantasy books. "This professor is really bothering me. I am okay with leisure, but what am I to do now?" Looks around and sees and waves. "I have something for you!"
